Whether you have shorter hair or long, one of the biggest trends in hair at the moment is the textured, effortless wave. That’s hair with natural shape, a bit of asymmetry, a little crunch and absolutely nothing too perfect. For inspiration and how to get it read on…

Gone are the days of hours spent struggling with the curling wand and those pageant-style sausage curls. Enter piece-y bobs and lobs (that’s a longer bob), relaxed mid-length hair with body and textured ends, and non-heat-styled long, summery locks.

However, unless you “just woke up like this” you’ll likely need to give your hair a little helping hand to get the desired effect. What you need to do is create TEXTURE and the easiest way to do this is by using a sea salt spray. Simply spray the product all through the hair from the roots to the tips (on damp hair), and scrunch it through with the fingers (no brush or comb!)

Depending on your hair type, you’ll just let your sprayed hair dry naturally (ultimate beachy look), or you may want to blast the roots with the hairdryer for volume. People with super curly or frizzy hair may need to straighten their hair with a straightener before letting the hair spring back into what will become a “relaxed effortless” look.
To bake in the wave, you can also try a) loosely plaiting or b) tightly twisting your hair before clamping over it with a hair straightener.
You really do need to experiment with what works best for your hair type and lifestyle.

Some of the most beautiful examples of this look have clearly been achieved at the salon with the expert use of tongs or straightener, but no matter which way you get the look, the main thing to remember is to avoid anything that looks like it’s taken a lot of effort – yes, I know it’s ironic.
You can buy sea salt spray, or for a tiny fraction of the cost you can whip it up yourself very easily.
Here is my recipe for DIY Sea Salt Spray:
- What you’ll need
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (for a dozen other uses for coconut oil click here)
- 1 heaped tablespoon of salt (I like Epsom Salt or sea salt)
- 1 teaspoon of hair gel
- 1 tablespoon of leave-in conditioner (optional)
- 1/2 cup of water
- Spray bottle / large atomiser
Instructions
- Place coconut oil in a medium-sized bowl and microwave 15–30 seconds until melted.
- Mix in salt, hair gel, and leave-in conditioner (if you are using it) and stir until combined.
- Heat water until hot but not boiling and stir into coconut oil mixture.
- Transfer to spray bottle.
- Spray generously onto damp hair and style.
